DP World is now officially in Tanzania, it has signed 3 port agreements

 

The international port company DP World from the Arab Emirates Kingdoms part of Dubai has signed agreements to develop the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania after reaching an agreement with the Tanzanian government with the aim of improving port services to bring productivity in the sector.

The signing of the agreements took place at Chamwino Palace in Dodoma in front of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan who is also the chairman of Chama ChaMapinduzi (CCM) which promised to make improvements in the economic sectors in its election manifesto for the year 2020/2025

Speaking at the Halfla which involved the Minister of Transport of Tanzania prof. Makame Mbarawa and the director of DP World Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan has said that the signed Port Investment Agreements have taken into account the opinions expressed through various social groups, as well as all the laws and procedures of the country.

President Samia said this today during the signing ceremony of 3 investment agreements in the Port of Dar es Salaam between the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA), the government and the DP World Company of Dubai held at the State House, Chamwino

In addition, President Samia has said that the government listened to various opinions expressed by the Tanganyika Lawyers Association, political parties, civil organizations, activists, media, social networks, religious leaders and some retired leaders.

President Samia has insisted that the signed agreements are based on the previous agreement between the government and the Dubai Authority who have agreed to the needs and wishes of the country as outlined in consideration of the national interest.


The Tanzania Minister of Transportation Hon. Makame Mbarawa in a handshake and exchanged the agreement document with the Chairman and CEO of the company Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem immediately after signing the Host Country Agreement between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the DP World Company of Dubai at an event held at the Chamwino Palace in Dodoma Region on October 22, 2023.

The agreements signed are the Host Government Agreement; Lease Agreement and Port Operation Agreement (Concession Agreement).

President Samia has also said that the strengthening that will be done through this investment will promote domestic and foreign businesses, as well as facilitate the economic activities of neighboring countries, thus increasing the government's income and promoting the national economy.

These 3 agreements have been signed in accordance with Article 2 of the Public Private Partnership Act No. 6 of 2023 (the Public Private Partnership Act Cap 103) and Article 2 of the Public Procurement Act No. 5 of 2023 (the Public Procurement Act No. 5 of 2023).

Various government leaders and development stakeholders, including the chairman of the board of directors of the Tanzania Port Authority, Ambassador Ernest Mangu, who is a retired Inspector General of the Police force, and religious leaders have witnessed the signing.

The action has come three months since the conflicts between activists and the government emerged regarding the agreement between Tanzania and Dubai on the investment where the leaders of some opposition parties and activists opposed the type of agreement contained in the original text of the agreement, where the Tanzanian government insists that His intention is good and he promises to work on the opinions of Tanzanians regarding the agreement between him and the company that owns the Port of Dubai.
