Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko today, April 17, 2025, in Kampala, Uganda, participated in the Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Energy of the Member States of the East African Power Purchase Agreement (EAPP) and the Meeting of Heads of Electricity Agencies or Institutions of the Member States.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the ministers discussed the electricity trading business among member countries.
Initially opening the meeting, Uganda's Minister of State for Energy, Hon. Sidronius Opolot Akaasai said that the goal of the EAPP, which was established on April 24, 2005, is to have an equitable distribution of energy resources in the region.
He said that so far EAPP has 13 member countries and the number is expected to increase, where those countries have energy produced through various sources such as water, solar and gas. In addition, the demand for electricity is greater than the current electricity production which is only 19,000 megawatts.
"Some countries still have challenges with electricity and thus are unable to supply 100 percent electricity. We need to give EAPP the ability to supply us with electricity since many countries have already connected their electricity distribution systems, now we need to work together to achieve our goal of trading electricity and making good use of the resources we have," said Hon. Akaasai.
He noted that through the meeting, they will launch the offices of the Independent Regulatory Board (IRB) of the East African Power Trading Zone, which already has some staff, with the aim of facilitating the business of power trading among member countries.
For his part, the Representative of the African Development Bank (AFDB), Dr. Kevin Kariuki has commended Tanzania through Dr. Biteko for organizing the African Heads of State Energy Summit - Mission 300 (M300) held on January 27-28, 2025 in Dar es Salaam, as it has demonstrated the country's strong commitment to using its resources to solve the energy challenge in Africa.
Meanwhile, the World Bank (WB) Representative, Dr. Joseph Kapeka, said the WB will continue to support the efforts of African Presidents through M300 which aims to increase access to electricity for 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.
The EAPP meeting began on April 16 and ended on April 17, 2025, where the Tanzanian delegation included the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of East African Affairs, Hon. Dennis Londo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesm Mramba, as well as senior officials from the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO).
